Shakespeare Theatre Company provides an opportunity for the next generation of theatre artists and arts leaders to gain hands-on experience, observe, and assist with the everyday operations of a large professional theatre. As a College Apprentice, you will volunteer for a full season, participating in long-term projects and special events. Each College Apprentice will be assigned a track and a supervisor within a department of interest. College Apprentices will be expected to volunteer up to 30 hours a month on events, programs, or administrative tasks. Department Tracks

Development Support STC’s Individual Giving team in fundraising efforts through the creation of content for Annual Fund campaigns, writing and designing of donor communications, and record keeping and database management (Tessitura). Learning Provide support for student matinees, school programs, Camp, Classes, and digital content creation. Opportunities to participate in Teaching Artist training. Literary Read and analyze scripts, assist with maintaining the literary database, and other administrative tasks in the artistic office. Marketing and Communications Learn all that goes into promoting world class theatre. If you appreciate the Oxford comma, know how to make a kick-ass TikTok, and generally have an interest in the marketing and communications of a large, non-profit theatre, please consider applying.

FAQs

What kind of time commitment does it take to be an Apprentice? When would I be working? Your exact hours will depend on your department track. Your supervisor will work with you to set up a specific schedule. At minimum you should expect to volunteer at the theatres or administrative offices up to 30 hours per month; however, additional hours are certainly allowed. Your assignments might be in the office during business hours (M–F, 9:30am–5:30pm), but may also be during evenings or weekends, when shows and classes are running. Will I only work with one department? What if I want to learn about another part of the theatre? You will be assigned primarily to one department for the duration of the season. However, there will be group projects and events that crop up throughout the year that may cross over to different departments. We aim to help you learn about, and get involved in, whatever interests you. I attend college outside the D.C. metro area. Can I be an Apprentice? Unfortunately, no. Being an apprentice requires that you volunteer at the theatre up to 30 hours per month, from September to May. If you live outside the area, you won’t be able to fulfill your duties.
